Shah Wali Wali (1927 – 2007), known as Taranasaz, the son of General Mohammad Wali Darwazee (one of the major supporters of constitutional monarchy in Afghanistan during the reign of king Amanullah in 1920s), is one of the major and widely recognized Afghan song writers of the twentieth century. His songs, lyrics, and musical compositions, often turning into musical hits, have been performed by numerous Afghan popular singers. He has been very influential in shaping modern music and the style of new Afghan ghazal. By writing lyrics and songs, inspired by the spirit of freedom and the desire for national self-determination, he supported the resistance movement during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. After the Soviet occupation he lived in exile in the United States of America until his death in San Francisco in 2007.
